Freya is the goddess of love, magic, fertility and material possessions in Norse mythology. She rules over the heavenly field of Folkvangr where she receives half of those who die in battle while the other half goes to Odin's hall, Valhalla. Freya is the wife of Odr, the couple share many similarities with another pair of famous Norse gods, Odin and Frigg. Due to the shared characteristic of Freya and Frigg,, many believe that they are practically the same persona derived from an earlier, proto-germinic goddess, Frija. The word Friday is named after Frija, just as the word Wednesday is named after Woden, the old name for Odin.
